Germán Mesa

Germán Mesa

Germán Mesa Fresneda (born May 12, 1967 in Cuatro Caminos, Havana) is a former Cuban baseball player, who played shortstop for Industriales of the Cuban National Series and for the Cuban national team. A defensive shortstop often compared to Ozzie Smith, Mesa was also nicknamed "El Imán" ("the magnet"). Mesa also led the National Series in hits, triples and stolen bases at various points in his career. Mesa retired in 2002, and is now a trainer for the Cuban national team.

In October 1996, Mesa was banned for life from Cuban baseball, for allegedly taking money from a U.S. sports agent. His suspension was lifted in March 1998.
