- Through the Looking Glass (film)
"Through The Looking Glass" is a 1976 adult film with avante-garde, experimental elements directed by Jonas Middleton and released by Sam Lake's Mature Pictures Corp. film production company.
The film stars Catherine Erhardt (better known for her role in Al Adamson's 1977 comedy "Cinderella 2000") who is credited as "Catherine Burgess" after the character she plays in the film and Jamie Gillis. The film also features an original musical score by Harry Manfredini and Arlon Ober who both became famous for composing the music to countless horror films in the 1980s and 1990s.
"Through The Looking Glass" discusses incest and the traumatic effects it has on those who have experienced it. The film presents sexual content in an artistic as opposed to erotic manner. The film also includes scenes of violence and sexual violence, which are rarely depicted in films.
The film was also cut into an R-rated version without hardcore sex scenes and played in American and European art houses. On its original run at New York's infamous World Theater (where Gerard Damiano's "Deep Throat" premiered), the theater screened a Warner Bros. cartoon before the feature film. It achieved some small notoriety in the New York papers at the time because it featured an underage soap opera actress in a small, non-sex role.
"Through The Looking Glass" is one of the few controversial films with hardcore sex from the 1970s to remain uncut on DVD. The film is currently under release from VCX Ltd. as well as Video-X-Pix.
