Jim Somerville

Jim Somerville

James William Somerville (Jim) served in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps from 15.5.41 until 25.12.46, service number 6854248.He saw active service with the 60th Rifles in Egypt (Alamein), Palestine, Syria, Greece and Italy and left the Regiment at the end of the war as sergeant.

Throughout his life he was very proud of his association with the KRRC, and in 2000 was delighted to be invited to Anzac Day in Napier, New Zealand to join with John Travis, Ron (Ginger) Mason and others for a “mini” Reunion.

Jim’s wartime travels and experiences together with an excellent memory made him an inveterate yarn spinner who could paint vivid word pictures to capture the high and low moments of those war years.

All of his war stories have been recorded and are available as a podcast and individual mp3 files from http://www.thevoicebooth.com/history.htm

Jim Somerville died in Christchurch New Zealand on 16 December 2000, a few weeks before his 80th birthday.
