Buckland River

Buckland River

The Buckland River is a 67 mi. long river in the U.S. state of Alaska. It flows NW to the Chukchi Sea at Eschscholtz Bay, 40 mi. SW of Selawik, Kotzebue-Kobuk Low. This river was named in 1826 by Capt. Beechey (1831, p. 323)RN, who wrote, " ...upon the river ... I bestowed the name ... of Buckland, in compliment to Dr. Buckland, the Professor of Geology at Oxford ..."

The Russian Hydrographic Department Chart 1455 of 1852 gives the stream's Inuit name as "Kanyk" and its Koyukan Indian name as "Kotsokhotana." Dall (1871, p. 284) gives the Inuit name as "Kung-uk."
