Joseph Bernstein (sometimes spelled "I. N. Bernshtein" or "Iosif Naumovič Bernštejn", _he. יוס(י)ף נאומוביץ ברנשטיין, _ru. Иосиф Наумович Бернштейн) (born
April 18 ,1945 inMoscow ) is anIsraeli mathematician working atTel Aviv University . He works inalgebraic geometry ,representation theory , andnumber theory .He received his PhD in 1972 under
Israil Gelfand atMoscow State University and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2004. He was awarded theIsrael Prize in mathematics in 2004. Some of his students includeEdward Frenkel ,Roman Bezrukavnikov ,Alexander Braverman , andDennis Gaitsgory , all of whom work on the geometric Langlands program.
