footnotes =Sandila is a city and a
municipal board inHardoi district in theIndia n state ofUttar Pradesh .History
Nothing much is known about the ancient history of Sandila. According to folk sayings, it was a forested area, believed to be the worship land of legendary sage Shandilya.
In British chronicles, the history of Sandila town started in the medieval period after Mohammad Ghori’s capture of Delhi throne. Two brave brothers in the martial Arakh clan, Salhia and Malhia, established the towns of Salhiapura (later known as Sandila) and Malhiapura (later known as
Malihabad ), respectively.Sandila thus became the seat of Arakh power in early 13th century and became a flourishing town under Arakhs. Arakhs held the region till last quarter of the 14th century, when a large army sent by
Feroz Shah Tughlaq under his lieutenant Syed Makhdum Alauddin, captured the town and the adjoining areas after a fierce battle with Arakhs. The remains of Arakh rule are seen in form of ruined fortresses in the mounds of Garhi Jindor, Malhaiyya garhi (Malaiyya), Sahinjana tila, Samad Khera, Muslewan garhi, Datli, Naurang garh (Tarauna), Sandi qila, and others.After the decline of the Arakhs, Sandila came under the rule of
Delhi sultanate . The folklore of Arakhs still sings about the bravery of its heroes, Salhia Singh and Malhia Singh.Sandila is one of the few Indian cities to have a Martian crater named after it.
The town of Sandila has a deep historical background. The history is first revealed by Hazrat Makhdoom Alla-ud-din. Whose Mazar, called Dargah Sharif, is in a mosque built by early Muslim ruler of India Feroz Shah Tughlaq, which is still in good condition.
Out of the city, there is a famous place called Alamgiran near a small canal towards Sitapur road. People remember this as a place where Emperor Aorangzeb stayed while returning from Kashmir.
Near railway station opposite Kothi Nawab Aizaz Rasool (Umrehra), the place known as Barah khamba, lie some ruins of a mosque present beside a tomb.
A general in Akbar era named Syed Sadar Jahan Farooqui, who was a follower of Hazrat Mujaddid Alif Sani (Shaikh Ahmed Farooqui Sarhindi), and later served in Jahangir era retired and the lands in Sandila were allotted to him. His grave is on the main road of Sandila near Madarsah Ghousia, Chhota Chowraha.
In his 3rd generation, was a famous Arabic Scholar named Maolana Hamd ullah. He had six sons who were all highly educated in their fields. He has written many books in Arabic and still one of his famous book on Sharah-e-sulam named after him, as Hamdullah is part of the syllabus in many madrasas. Many of his books remain un-printed. (He was running a school MADARSAH MANSOORIYA)
Sandila is famous for its delicious sweet, Laddoo and out-of-the-world mango Chounsa (locally called Samar Bahisht). Situated on the main railway track/, 55Km from Lucknow and 60Km from Hardoi.U.P.India, Sandila is home to Sirahouz Sharif, a well-known resting place of the revered Hafiz Syed Wazir Ali Shah, although it is at the outskirts of the city near Hindu worship place Debin Talaab (Hatia Haran) Raam lila maidan adjacent to the Eid Gah of the city.
Sirahouz Sharif was a barren place until previous century (1870). When one Hafiz Sahib (Syed Wazir Ali Shah) from Mohalla Mandai started living here. He was a Tahsildar in Nag pore in 1850. He was a very religious and practical Muslim and always in search of a true guide who would steer him to God Almighty. One night while reciting Quran, he dozed of and saw a person calling his name and saying ‘if you need the true line of God come to me.’ After prayer he discussed this matter with his wife and on the 2nd night the dream appeared again. His wife suggested that this must be a message from God and you should go for it. He resigned from his job and returned to his ancestral place Sandila where his father Syed Enayat Ali Shah and other family members lived. He left the children and family behind and started a journey of enlightenment.Firstly, he reached Delhi and visited all the famous shrines there. Then he went to Sarhind Sharif (in Punjab), then to Lahore and Multan. At every place he was suggested to go to another place where he was hinted to receive something big.He reached Peshawar and started journey towards Kabul along with a Caravan. Many months were spent in this course and he lost almost all the belongings (for one moment a man can imagine what sort of hardship he had to face whereas he had maintained a high standard of living before he began his search for almighty.) Caravan people behaved with him very harshly. He lost everything even his shoes and travelled on foot on a very tough terrain and extreme weather. After reaching Jalalabad he got ill. Feeling too weak to walk, he lay in a mud-built mosque. A horse rider came to the gate of t eh mosque and asked if there was any Indian inside. Hafiz sahib replied in his weekend voice, which could not reach the caller, so he repeated those words. In the meantime Hafiz Sahib managed to reach near the gate and said that yes I am here. The rider said Soofi Saheb is calling you and pulled him like a child on to the horseback. After reaching the destination he saw the same person standing there whom he used to see in his dreams. He jumped out and touched his feet exclaiming “here you are I am looking for you every where.” Soofi sahib (Syed Gul Kabuli) took him to his home and treated him as his son. Soofi Saheb taught his son the higher realm of Silsila-e Naqshbandiya Bannooriya. Soofi sahib was in fact a Ghous-e-zamana but apparently he was kiln maker (KUMHAAR) and for the local people he was also a fakir who treated their donkeys and cattle when they got sick.Hafiz sahib stayed there for many years, passing his time happily. But his father Syed Enayat Ali shah searched for him every where and reached Multan. Soofi sahib instructed him to leave to his place, Sandila. He requested him that he doesn’t want to leave and want to live with him. But he turned down his request.Half-heartedly he left his Peer’s house with grief and sorrow and remembering those glorious days passed with his Peer he reached his ancestral place Sandila, where his father Syed Enayat Ali shah, his wife and two sons Mohammed Usman and Mohammed Siddiq and three daughters were waiting for his return.
Prior to Hafiz Sahib’s faqiree, his living standards must be very high but after words it declined to a poor living. On his return, he stayed in a mosque in Imam Chowk area, after disturbance he left to another Masjid Dahra, than another Masjid Takiyah Bismillah Shah. But people never left him alone to let his soul attain a finer belonging. At that time there was a madersah called Madersah Shoukatiya, run by Raees of Sandila Choudhry Nusrat Ali. Many famous teachers and a good number of books were written and housed there. One of the teachers, was a visitor of Hafiz sahib. Another teacher Maolana Muqeem-ud-din from Daamaan (now in NWFP distt D.I.Khan) was also a frequent visitor. Firstly, Maolana Muqeem-ud-din did not understand the meaning of dunyae fani but after passing of time he became aware what is life and then became mureed of Hafiz sahib.
Later, he introduced the people of Daamaan to Hafiz Sahib where hundreds of thousands became his mureed. Hafiz Sahib travelled to Bihar, Bengal, Punjab and other places where many people became his followers. He was 106 years old when he passed away in 1929. He is buried at Sirahouz Sharif.
His elder son Hakim Mohamed Usman was an Aalim-e-deen and Hakim and had many more abilities. He died in 1954. He had three sons: Hafiz Mohammed Irfan died in 1940, Maolana Ghafoor Ahmed died in 1997 in Sandila and buried at Sirahouz Sharif, and lastly Maolana Ghufran Ahmed (alias Munney Bhaiya) died in 1998 in Karachi. He left 5 sons and two daughters (Imran Ahmed, Furqan Ahmed, Salman Ahmed, Noman Ahmed and Hassaan Ahmed). His daughter is living in Lahore.
Hafiz sahib’s second son Mohammed Siddiq was a companion of his father and a very pious and delightful person. He died in 1940 in Bityah (Bihar). He also had three sons. Maolana Mohammed Rafiq died 1954 and Maolana Mohammed Shafiq (alias achhay mian) died in 1996. His youngest son is Maolana Atiq ur Rehman and lives with his family in Bityah. (Bihar)
Sirahouz, nowadays, is a serene and accommodative place. It has three-story building and a big kitchen and a separate ladies residence hall and rooms. It is a place to visit and to stay, where one’s soul is stirred and is given a new lease of life. Visitors who go there feel peace and harmony and a great satisfaction, free from all worldly anxieties. He develops complete trust and sincerity towards God almighty and the humanity. Built by Hafiz sahib himself, Sirhaouz has continued to flourish under successive shazadgans and gaddi nasheens. Its water is still tremendously tasteful. In fact, while keeping it for many years its taste and odour never changes.
