mapy=17.3Fasano is a town in
Italy , in theprovince of Brindisi , region ofApulia . It has about 40,000 inhabitants.It marks the border between the
Altosalento and the province of Bari. It is equidistant (approximately 50 km) from three of the provincial capitals inPuglia , namelyBari ,Taranto andBrindisi . The name Fasano probably derives from the “Faso”, large wild columbus doves (also represented on the civic coat of arms) which drunk from the "foggie", which was a type of swamp or pool in the open air formed from the water which flowed down from the surrounding hills. This area where the pool once was is now a communal garden. The town is roughly nowrap|128 square km in area.Geography
Fasano is situated in an extended area with secular olive trees and its territory extends from hills to the sea with rich Mediterranean vegetation. Among some of the places of interest in the surrounding area the most notable are: the
Selva di Fasano , today a garden with villas, original trulli houses and the zoo safariFasanolandia , the first of its kind in Europe; the Laureto and Canale di Pirro holiday resorts with numerous vines which occupy the land characterised by dry stone walls and trulli. Coming down from hills the town of Fasano occupies a dominant position in the valley which then leads down to the sea: coastal resorts include Savelletri with its beaches, the archaeological digs atEgnazia and a golf course andTorre Canne with its dunes and the wet grassland zones of the coastal park, which includes lodges, health spas and the Lydians. The coast is characterized by a peaceful atmosphere that prevails despite growing tourism. Around Fasano there are Pezze di Greco, Montalbano, Speziale and Pozzo Faceto, important centres of secular olive cultivation and a range of medieval fortified masserie or farmhouses aimed at agricultural tourism.
