- Kuruvai
Kuruvai also known as "short-term" in Tamil is a term used to define the crops grown in cauvery Delta of
Tamil Nadu state inIndia . The crops that are grown in this delta are mostly paddy and the health of these crops and the eventual livelihood of these farmers are extremely dependent on abundant flow of water on theCauvery river .The river has been the center of controversy between Tamil Nadu State and Karnataka State of India. The river which originates in
Karnataka has been controlled with a Dam in Karnataka so as to stop/release the flow at karnataka's will into Tamil Nadu thereby defying nature.Karnataka refuses to release water into Tamil Nadu as those reserves are needed for farming and development of their economy. Taml Nadu contends that they are treated unfairly by Karnataka and their own economy (which is dependent on agriculture) is being afected a lot by Karnataka's actions.
The issue went to the
Supreme Court of India which ruled in Tamil Nadu's favor and directed Karnataka to release water. The order was defied by Karnataka and led to a political turmoil in Karnataka.
