Several American professional football teams in New York have used the "Yankees" name borrowed from the baseball team.
*New York Yankees (NFL), a team that played in the 1926 American Football League before competing in the NFL from 1927-28.
*New York Yankees (1936 AFL), a team that played in the second AFL in 1936 and 1937. Some sources including the Pro Football Hall of Fame call them the Yanks.
*New York Yankees (1940 AFL), a team that played in the third AFL in 1940 as the Yankees and in 1941 as the Americans.
*New York Yankees (1941), a short-lived member of the American Association.
*New York Yankees (AAFC), played 1946-49 in the All-America Football Conference.
Some sources mistakenly refer to NFL teams from Boston (1944-1948) and New York (1950-1951) as the Yankees.The New York (and Boston) Yanks were named New York Bulldogs in 1949, prior to its merger with the AAFC Yankees and after its move from Boston.
