Loyola Sullivan (born
April 3 ,1949 ) is a former Canadian provincial politician elected as the Member of theNewfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly for the Ferryland electoral district. He was appointed as Minister of Finance by the Progressive Conservative government under Premier Danny Williams in late 2003, and Government House Leader in July 2006.Sullivan was first elected to the Newfoundland legislature in 1992. From 1996 to 1998 he served as Leader of the Official Opposition. In late December 2006 Sullivan announced his resignation from provincial politics.
On January 25, 2007, Sullivan was appointed as Ambassador for Fisheries Conservation by the Government of Canada.
Sullivan was born and raised in Calvert on the Southern Shore of Newfoundland where he owned several fish processing facilities. He left the business and sold out in 1992, the year of the cod moritorium in Newfoundland and then entered politics. The son of a fisherman, Sullivan studied at
Memorial University and obtained Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees. He coached 13 provincial high school championships in hockey, wrestling and track and field and was offered a full scholarship to Memorial University for wrestling. Sullivan was also an avid hockey player and won several scoring titles in local leagues. He married Verna Walsh of Fermeuse, Newfoundland and they had 3 children, Julie, Shelley and Stefan.
