Banana ketchup

Banana ketchup or banana sauce is a prepared condiment made from banana fruit mashed, with sugar, vinegar, and spices, and sometimes colored with red food coloring to look more like tomato ketchup. Banana ketchup is made in the Philippines, Hawaii, and the West Indies.

It was said to have been invented in the Philippines during the Japanese Occupation of the country, 1942-45,Fact|date=March 2007 when American-made condiments became virtually impossible to find. It began to be mass produced in the 1950s and achieved widespread use in the 1970s.Fact|date=March 2007

Banana ketchup is often used as dressing for Filipino fried chicken (not breaded) and mixed with local copies of Worcestershire sauce. Banana ketchup is also mixed with mayonnaise to be used as a salad dressing. It is also used as an ingredient in Filipino spaghetti, instead of spaghetti sauce.
