website_name =City of Ely Community College is a comprehensive
secondary school appointed as a Business & Enterprise College, located inEly ,Cambridgeshire , approximately 20 miles fromCambridge . There are 1239 pupils on the roll. (2005 Ofsted Inspector report figure)History
The school's history goes back to the early 1960s, when it was founded by way of a donation from the Catherine Needham Foundation, a local charitable trust set up in memory of Lady Catherine Needham.
The school was originally called Needham's Grammar School, and when first opened, it had approx. 790 pupils attending. It was renamed in the mid 1980s to City of Ely College, under the direction of the
Head teacher , Mr Roger Daw.Layout
The school is split into 5 buildings, each housing different areas of the school's curriculum:
Needham's Block - The original school building, which now houses the Mathematics, English, Design Technology and Modern Foreign Languages Units.
Downham Block - This is the newest area, housing History, Geography, and PSHE.
Bedford Block - The former home of the Ely High School for Girls until 1980, this is now the home to Physical Education, Science, ICT and the Main School Library.
Littleport Block - Home of the Business and Enterprise Unit, Art, Social Sciences, and Special Services who combine their own learning with that of the neighbouring Highfield Special School, whose pupils attend three times a week for mainstream integration.
The school also had a multi-million pound Sports Hall completed in 2004.
Current management
There is currently a temporary principal in place at the school, the former vice-principal Mr. Richard Baker, who will be working until September 2009.
This follows the removal of the new principal, Mr Andrew Johnson, over allegations that he assaulted a pupil while in his former post as the deputy headmaster of the Madejski Academy, in Reading, Berkshire. A statement on the College's website says that "Due to a change in his personal circumstances, the governors and the leadership team regret to inform you (sic) that Andy Johnson will not be joining this college as principal."
The vacancy for a new headteacher has appeared on the college website. [cite web
