It was created onJanuary 1 ,1999 as a result of the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998. Its administrative seat is the city ofKielce , although the city is not part of the county (it constitutes a separate city county). The county contains four towns:Chęciny , convert|14|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-west of Kielce,Chmielnik , convert|32|km|mi|0|abbr=on south of Kielce,Daleszyce , convert|17|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-east of Kielce, andBodzentyn , convert|25|km|mi|0|abbr=on east of Kielce.The county covers an area of convert|2247.45|km2|sqmi|1. As of 2006 its total population is 198,581, out of which the population of Chęciny is 4,252, that of Chmielnik is 4,005, that of Daleszyce is 2,800, that of Bodzentyn is 2,241, and the rural population is 188,083.
