Banu Awf

Banu Awf

The Banu Awf ( _ar. بنو عوف, ArTranslit|Banu ‘Awf) was one of the Jewish tribes of Arabia during Muhammad's era [www.mpacuk.org [http://www.mpacuk.org/content/view/211/ MPACUK ] ] .

The Banu Awf were an Arab tribe who wished to settle in the Jewish-ruled Tayma. The population there insisted that in order to settle the Banu Awf must adopt Judaism. After having done so, they moved on to Yathrib. [Moshe Gil, "The Origins of the Jews of Yathrib," J.S.A.I. 4 (1984):210f] .

They were included in Point 30 of the Constitution of Medina as allies to the Muslims, being as "one nation", but retaining their Jewish religion [Constitution_of_Medina [http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Constitution_of_Medina] ] [www.balagh.net [http://www.balagh.net/english/ahl_bayt/the_message/27.htm] ] .
