- Ernst Remak
Ernst Julius Remak (
May 26 ,1849 ,Berlin -May 24 ,1911 ,Wiesbaden ) was a Germanneurologist who was the son of famed neurologistRobert Remak . He received his education at the Universities of Breslau, Berlin, Würzburg, Strasbourg and Heidelberg, and obtained the degree ofM.D. in 1870. At Heidelberg, he was a student of neurologistWilhelm Heinrich Erb . Afterwards he took part in theFranco-Prussian War of 1870-71. After serving as assistant in the department for nervous diseases at theCharité Hospital,Berlin from 1873 to 1875, he established himself as a neuropathologist in the German capital, where he becameprivat-docent in 1877, andprofessor in 1893.With
Edward Flatau he published an important work onneuritis andpolyneuritis that was selected byCarl Nothnagel to be part of his "Handbuch der speziellen Pathologie und Therapie". His name is associated with the eponymous "Remak reflex", which isplantar flexion of the first three toes, and sometimes the foot, with extension of theknee induced by stroking of the upper anterior surface of thethigh . This reflex is a sign of aspinal cord lesion.Literary works
