1976 , it is named in the honor ofJohn Brashear , a pioneering Pittsburghastronomer . It was created to help with segregation issues in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.Fact|date=February 2007 The Pittsburgh Board of Education closedFifth Avenue High School , Gladstone High School in Hazelwood and South Hills High School and merged the students in the then-state-of-the-art building with 5000 or more students attending. The school open with protesters from Brookline and Beechview communities, as well as the Hill and Hazelwood, the school had mass media coverage, and School Security and local Police were on hand the first week of school in 1976, this was a new direction for the Board of Education.Fact|date=February 2007 The school colors are black and gold, and the original school mascot were Bullets, depicted by two torpedo shaped bullets with a mean face and fists clenched.Fact|date=February 2007 They were replaced in the early 1990s with a new mascot the Bull in response to parental complaints that the Bullets could incite violence in students.Fact|date=February 2007Computer Science Magnet
Brashear High School offers the Computer Science magnet for the City of Pittsburgh. Students have the opportunity to take four years of computer programming courses. Notable graduates of the Computer Science magnet include Renee Bryce (c/o 1996), a professor of Computer Science at the Utah State University. Bryce's research encompasses applications of combinatorial designs to software testing.
