Heckmondwike ,Yorkshire , Brearley represented Yorkshire as a right-handed batsman in 1937 and Middlesex in 1949. He also played for Yorkshire Men's Hockey team whilst in Sheffield. [ [http://www.oldedwardians.org.uk/nlc/mags/39.March.html KES Magazine, March 1939] ]After obtaining a B.Sc. from the
University of Leeds , he was a teacher at King Edward VII School inSheffield from 1937 to 1946, [ [http://www.oldedwardians.org.uk/nlc/mags/37.Dec.html KES Magazine, Dec 1937] ] interrupted by wartime service as Instructor Lieutenant in the R.N.V.R. He suffered fromAlzheimer's disease in his last years.
