Kadiri is a town and a municipality in the southeastern part of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh, India.

The name Kadiri is a vernacular name for the Sanskrit word, Khadri, meaning Canary wood or Indian Mulberry (Morinda Citrifolia). Legend has it that the Lord Sri Khadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy has emerged out of this tree in this place and hence the name.

The famous Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is located in this town, and large numbers of Hindu pilgrims visit the Temple throughout the year.

Lord Narasimha at Kadiri is swayambhu emerging from the roots of Khadri tree. The Moolavirat is that of Ashta Bahu Narasimha (having eight hands) cleaving Hiranyakasipu and transforming into a more protecting persona with Prahlada standing beside him with folded hands.

Astonishingly, after the daily abhishekham is performed, the Murthy of the Lord oozes sweat even after being repeatedly wiped off by the Archakas here

A famous event carried out every year is the Rathothsavam (Car Festival), on this holy day, a huge Rath (Chariot) with the Lord Lakshmi Narasimha's idol on it is pulled by hundreds of men and watched by thousands of devotees."' The famous Thimmamma Marrimanu (World's Biggest Banyan Tree spread in convert|5|acre|ha|0 of land. It got entry in the "Guinness Book of Records", 1989). It is located just 25 km away from Kadiri. Kadiri is one of the few towns in Andhra Pradesh with a large Muslim population of 55% of the town.

Kadiri is also famous for jasmine flowers(Malle Pulu),Kumkum (Vermilion),and Silk(Pattu Dharam). Kadiri was comparatively rich region in Anantapur district till recently in the agriculture sector. Kadiri variety of groundnut is quite famous for its yield. Main crops in this region are groundnut and sunflower.

Kadiri was a biggest revenue division (taluks) before formation of mandals (taluks were subdivided into mandals as part of admistrative reforms carried out in 1980s). Kadiri was represented in state assembly by famous Vema reddy garu in 1960s and 70s. He also served as speaker for the state assembly.

Geography

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Kadiri had a population of 76,261. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kadiri has an average literacy rate of 57%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 46%.
