11 o'clock news

11 o'clock news

The 11 o'clock news is a term used for news programs that are broadcast at 11:00 p.m. local time. This is the traditional hour for the late local news broadcast on CBS, NBC, and ABC affiliated stations in the United States that are in the Eastern Time Zone or the Pacific Time Zone.

By contrast, stations that are affiliated with Fox, The CW, MyNetworkTV, or that are independent stations tend to have newscasts at 10:00 p.m. (Eastern/Pacific), 9:00 p.m. (Central/Mountain).

Many stories on the 11 p.m. newscasts are follow ups of ones airing earlier in the day.

The stock phrase "film at 11" comes from promos run during prime time for the upcoming newscast, promising shots from a breaking story during the 11 p.m. newscast. However, it has gone out of the television lexicon due to technological advances in remote broadcasting have made getting film back to the station a thing of the past.
