Diogo Soares was a 16th-century Portuguese navigator and explorer. He visited Madagascar in 1543 and named the northern coastal town of Antsiranana. Antsiranana contained his name until 1975, sometimes in a Spanish form as Diego Suárez. The large natural bay along the northeast coast of Madagascar is named after him as Diego Suarez Bay.
