SMAUG (Simulated Medieval Adventure Multi-User Game) [cite web|url=http://www.brandeis.edu/pubs/jove/HTML/v2/keegan.html |title=A Classification of MUDs, by Martin Keegan] is a Merc and
DikuMUD derivedMUD online game program. Its name is abackronym inspired by the dragonSmaug found inJ. R. R. Tolkien 's fiction. The project was started in May of1994 by Derek Snider, known in-game as "Thoric". In July of 1994, "Realms of Despair ", a MUD run by Snider and featuring the SMAUG codebase was opened to the public [cite web|url=http://groups.google.com/group/alt.bbs.majorbbs/msg/33d0c2ad222e977f?dmode=source&hl=en |title=Bulletin board announcement for the opening of "Realms of Despair"] . The SMAUGsource code was publicly released in December of1996 due to an earlier leak of the code and some areas from "Realms of Despair". SMAUG has grown to be a very popular code base.SmaugFUSS (Fixed Up SMAUG Source) The ongoing goal of the SMAUG FUSS Project is to find and eliminate as many of the bugs in the stock SMAUG source code as possible so as to provide for a clean, stable base for new admins to run a SMAUG mud from.AFKMud is an advanced SMAUG derivative with tons of new features designed to make both gameplay and administration fun and enjoyable.SMAUG has also served as a base for the development of several other MUDs, including the
