- Westgate, Columbus, Ohio
Westgate is a community within the Greater Hilltop area of Columbus, located between West Broad Street and
Sullivant Avenue . It was constructed partially on land formerly housing the American Civil WarCamp Chase and Confederate Prison. After the Civil War, the land was purchased by Joseph Binns and his associates to be used to start aMennonite Community. These plans failed to materialize, and the land was developed as a "streetcar suburb" in the 1930s. Features include Westgate Park and the Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery.Westgate is near several other Columbus neighborhoods, such as Riverbend, Cherry Creek, and Franklinton, and is in Precinct 19 of the
Columbus Division of Police . It is a family friendly area. The well-built Westgate Homes have maintained and increased in value. This neighborhood is similar to the Clintonville area of Columbus, but housing prices are lower. Some have considered the area to be just at family friendly as Hilliard or Dublin. Local magazine 'Columbus Monthly' named Westgate one of the ten best neighborhoods to live in the City of Columbus again in 2007. A recent influx of
Hispanic immigrants is changing the makeup of the Greater Hilltop area. Housing costs run from the low $80,000s to the mid $200,000s. The neighborhood is also becoming increasly popular with the Gay community.See also
