KCWL-TV (originally KOWH) is the CW-affiliated television station in Lincoln, Nebraska. Owned by Lincoln Broadcasting, LLC (a wholly owned subsidiary of the "Omaha World-Herald", the initials of which made up the original calls), KOWH began broadcasting on June 26, 2006. The rights to The CW in the Lincoln market are owned by Pappas Telecasting Companies; KCWL has contracted with Pappas for marketing, sales and some programming services.

A request was filed for the usage of the KCWL-TV callsign by Lincoln Broadcasting for KOWH. It is dated 25 July 2006. On August 2, 2006 the station officially changed its call signs to KCWL.

The station carries no live programming and is a member of the The CW Plus.

On September 1, 2006 KCWL was added to the primary cable system in Lincoln, Time Warner Cable, on channel 18 in their low basic cable tier. [http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2006/08/14/local/doc44dfa1bd1eefb619692257.txt] . KCWL replaced KWBL, which was a cable-only, "WB 100+" station, on cable systems in central Nebraska, including Charter Communications in Hastings, Grand Island, and Kearney.

Digital television

Because it was granted an original construction permit after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 21, 1997 [http://www.transmitter.com/FCC97115/chanplan.html] , the station did not receive a companion channel for a digital television station. Instead, on or before February 17, 2009, which is the end of the digital TV conversion period for full-service stations, KCWL-TV will be required to turn off its analog signal and turn on its digital signal (called a "flash-cut").
