genus of prehistoricperissodactyl mammal of the familyBrontotheriidae , an extinct group ofrhinoceros -like browsers related tohorse s. The genus was found inNorth America during the LateEocene . The creature stood 2.50 m (8 ft 4 in) tall at the shoulders and resembled arhinoceros , possessing a forked (in a Y, orslingshot shape), horn-like protrusion on its nose, with blunt ends. Many "Brontotherium" remains have been found inSouth Dakota andNebraska . In the past, specimens exposed by severerainstorm s were found by Native Americans of theSioux tribe. The Sioux believed these creatures producedthunderstorm s when running over thecloud s, and called them 'thunderhorse s'. Many of theskeleton s found by the Sioux belonged toherd s which were killed byvolcanic eruption s of theRocky Mountains , which were volcanically active at the time."Brontotherium"'s dorsal
vertebra e above theshoulder s had extra long spines to support the hugeneck muscle s needed to carry the heavyskull . Possibly, "Brontotherium" had fleshylip s and a longtongue , perfect for carefully selecting preferred food (soft stems and leaves).According to Mihlbachler et al. 2004, the species within genus "Brontotherium" were merged with the genus "
Megacerops ", though not all authorities agree on this.
