It was created onJanuary 1 ,1999 as a result of the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998. Its administrative seat and largest town isPłońsk , which lies convert|63|km|mi|0 north-west ofWarsaw . The only other town in the county isRaciąż , lying convert|25|km|mi|0|abbr=on north-west of Płońsk.The county covers an area of convert|1383.67|km2|sqmi|1. As of 2006 its total population is 87,430, out of which the population of Płońsk is 22,233, that of Raciąż is 4,752, and the rural population is 60,445.
