city set in the foothills of theCarpathian Mountains , in theIvano-Frankivsk Oblast (province) of westernUkraine . It is a separatemunicipality subordinate to the oblast, as well as the administrative center of the surroundingKalusky Raion (district). The current estimated population is around 63,800 (as of2004 ).Important local industries include food processing, clothing manufacture, chemicals, handicrafts, woodcarving, and concrete.
History
The earliest known mention of Kalush is the accounting of a settlement of that name in a Halychyna chronicle dated
May 27 ,1437 . Incorporated as a city in1939 , the city was part of thePolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth ,Austria-Hungary andSecond Polish Republic . In1940 , the Soviets forced Polish inhabitants of Kalush to leave the town and forcefully moved them toSiberia , where most of the Poles died. Then, in late1941 and1942 , Jewish inhabitants of Kalush were murdered by the Germans.Since the
16th Century , a Jewish community has flourished in the city; however, in1941 , while under Nazi control, that community was virtually eliminated.Notable Residents
