Tony Gormley

Anthony Gormley ((Irish Óglach Antoine Ó Goirmleadhaigh) (b. 17 September 1962 – d. 8 May1987) was a member in the East Tyrone Brigade of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) from Galbally, County Tyrone.

Background

Gormley was the second oldest in a family of six children and grew up with Declan Arthurs and Seamus Donnelly in the small village of Galbally. ["Tírghrá", National Commemoration Centre, 2002. PB) ISBN 0-9542946-0-2 p.288] Gormley owned a successful engineering sub-contracting company and had twelve employees and was a strategist within the East Tyrone Brigade. Fact|date=February 2008

He joined the PIRA in 1981 and became a highly active member of the paramilitary group. He was one of eight IRA members and one civilian killed on 8 May 1987 during a Special Air Service ambush.

At the time of the ambush Gormley was involved in an attack on a Royal Ulster Constabulary station in Loughgall, County Armagh.
