Hartcliffe Engineering Community College, previously known as Hartcliffe Secondary School, was built in the 1960s and was home to over 2400 students across two sites. The school was built to serve new housing which replaced bomb damaged property during the post-World War II period and at the time it was one of the largest schools in the country.

Now, the school has around 80 pupils whom are taught on the one site. The school is part of a life long provision of education from nursery, reception and primary (Which is provided at Teyfat Community School, but due to be incorporated into the new campus) to secondary and Post-16 education.

The Future

The vision for the site, including Teyfant Community School and New Fosseway Special school, is to create the Hartcliffe Education Campus, whereby all levels of education are provided for the local area in the same campus. The project is also being sponsored by the University of the West of England, who are key partners in the project. A quick look at the college's website will show that the build is underway.

Other facilities

As part of the development drive on the campus, a gymnastics centre was constructed. The City of Bristol Gymnastics Centre provides facilities for both adults and children and provides South Bristol with a city wide recognised set of facilities to use.

As well as that, the school and gymnastics centre are surrounded by sports fields. Physical education and various other field based events (such as Sports Days) are regularly held there.

The whole development is part of the wider regeneration of Hartcliffe (see Symes Avenue) and the Hengrove Park / Old airport redevelopments. For example, the new build will not contain a swimming pool; this is due to the anticipated "super pool" that is planned (very distantly) for Hengrove.
