On the Waterfront (TV Series)

On the Waterfront (TV Series)

"On the Waterfront" was a BBC Saturday morning children's programme, filmed at Brunswick Dock, Liverpool. It was hosted by Andrew O'Connor, Kate Copstick, Bernadette Nolan and Terry Randall.

To fill the gap during the summer months when the usual Saturday morning show (such Going Live!) was on hiatus, the BBC would commission a replacement show for a limited summer run with a different setting but broadly similar content to the "main" show that ran during the rest of the year. "On the Waterfront" filled this slot for two years - in the summers of 1988 and 1989 "Saturday Mornings timeline, http://www.saturdaymornings.co.uk/timeline/ Retrieved 9 June 2008] and consisted of comedy sketches interspersed with cartoons, competitions and music videos or performances.

Content

The comedy sketches included:
* Lantern Jaw - A cartoon spoof superhero with a very square jaw
* The Flashing Blade - A edited episode from the French live-action series of the same name, with comedy dialogue recorded over the original lines
* VeryGoodCar - A spoof of Gerry Anderson puppet series, specifically Supercar, using the presenters pretending to be puppets
* The Blockheads - A suburban family who are incredibly stupid

Among the cartoons featured were:
* US import Visionaries, promoting the toys of the same name

Each edition of the show would conclude with the Disco, with the presenters delivering jokes to each other during a disco in the studio.

Trivia

The writer Russell T. Davies, later a BAFTA Award-winner for his work on programmes such as "Queer as Folk" and "Doctor Who", worked on the series, writing the script for a comedy dubbed version of the children's drama series "The Flashing Blade".
