Michelle Tempest

Dr. Michelle Tempest (born 23 January 1976) is a British psychiatrist and author. In 2010 she was the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for North West Durham.^[1]

Academic background

Tempest comes from Surrey and initially qualified as a doctor at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge (MA, MB BChir).^[2] She subsequently pursued the study of law, completing a Masters degree, again at Cambridge, being awarded the LLM,^[3] making her one of a select band of dually qualified physician-lawyers. She went onto teach in both of these fields, lecturing both undergraduates and post-graduate students at the University of Cambridge and trainees from UEA.

Medical career

Dr Tempest practised at Addenbrooke's Hospital in numerous different departments from general medicine and accident and emergency to infectious diseases, vascular surgery and colorectal surgery. Following this, she practised as a psychiatrist at Fulbourn Hospital and its surrounding hospitals.

As well as general psychiatry, she has expertise in rehabilitation psychiatry, learning disability psychiatry, old age psychiatry and liaison psychiatry. She now holds a substantive post working in Liaison Psychiatry at Addenbrooke's, working as part of a team providing psychiatric input for over 1,000 inpatients.^{[citation needed]}

Tempest: the author

Tempest edited the book The Future of the NHS (published in 2006 (ISBN 1-85811-369-5) by xpl Publishing) following her own experiences within the organisation and in particular through her admiration for the staff and in the hope of improving the service for her patients. It brought together 44 leading experts in the fields of health care, politics and policy making and is now used as a Parliamentary reference text.^{[citation needed]}

Her second treatise (with Tim Kevan) resulted in Why Lawyers Should Surf, which was reviewed by The Independent as a book which "subtly restores a sense of poetry to ... become a better human being".

Political career

She has contributed papers and specialist advice to think tanks such as the Centre for Policy Studies and the Centre for Social Justice. Andrew Lansley, M.P., the Shadow Secretary of State for Health, has been able to draw on Tempest's first-hand experience of the challenges facing the NHS, to aid understanding of the real life impact of Government policy.^{[citation needed]}

Politics

She has also been involved in the Coningsby Club, a Conservative discussion organisation, since 1992. She was elected as the club Chairman for the 2007 term and was the first female to hold this position since the club formed in 1921. She helped in the campaign in the successful by-elections in Henley and Crewe & Nantwich. In 2005, she was an integral part of a working party branding group, chaired by a Board Member directly under David Cameron's scrutiny. In 2007, she stood as a Council Candidate for the King's Hedges ward in Cambridge, and gained a 8% swing to the Conservatives. She was a candidate for North West Durham.^{[citation needed]}
