late Tokugawa shogunate sided with Satsuma in theBattle of Toba-Fushimi . After theMeiji Restoration , Shinohara became a businessman and later, a devoutChristian . In his memoirs, Shinohara describes pivotal events and circumstances surrounding theShinsengumi and his ownassassination attempt onKondo Isami and Ito Kashitaro as well as the battles in Aburakoji.
