single 7 date = Late 1999"Dónde Están los Ladrones?" (Spanish for "Where Are the Thieves?") is the second official studio album by
Shakira , released in 1998. "Dónde Están los Ladrones?" sold over 1,000,000 copies in theU.S. alone, and more than 8 million copies worldwide. Though the album did not surface well on theBillboard 200 , peaking at #131, the album is one of the highest selling Spanish-language albums in the United States. Two of the album's songs garnered ShakiraLatin Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. In addition, it was nominated for aGrammy Award in 1999 for Best Latin Album. The album was re-issued in 2005, to promote the sales of "Oral Fixation Vol. 2 ". The album also contains 2 bonus tracks in certain countries.Album information
The album took nine months to produce since more people worked on the album, more opinions were given, and more demos were released, which made the production process longer and more complicated than
Pies Descalzos . What prolonged the process even more was that Shakira wanted perfection in the album, since she knew that many critics would judge her on her second breakthrough album to see if she will still continue to be a musical prodigy in Latin America, so Shakira made three or four demos of each song. Shakira had a bigger budget for the album and hundreds of thousands of dollars on promotion. Because of that, the album sold 300,000 copies on the day it was released and one million by the end of the month. The album title, was inspired by one of Shakira's trips to the capital of her native country
Colombia ,Bogotá . In the airport, a thief stole much of her luggage, including a briefcase that contained all the lyrics Shakira had been working on for the album. All was lost. Demoralized, Shakira had to start anew. According to interviews, Shakira claimed she almost gave up, but it was only her dedication to completing the album that inspired her to start working again. Thus, the title track was born. (Source: from the book "Shakira: Woman Full of Grace" by Ximena Diego). In an interview she gave to Turkish magazine "Blue Jean" in 1999, she stated that the title was dedicated to men, who are, according to her, the greatest thieves in the world that steal the women's heart and vanish away.
