* 1836 – The Utica and Schenectady Railroad, a predecessor of the New York Central Railroad in New York, opens.
* 1853 – The original Acton station (renamed in 1920 to Acton Central) near London, England, opens.

20th century

* 1908 – New York City Subway's IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line extension from Marble Hill-225th Street to Van Cortlandt Park-242nd Street station opens.
* 1913 – The Alton and Southern Railroad is formed through the merger of the Alton and Southern Railroad Company, the Denverside Connecting Railroad and the Alton and Southern Railway.
* 1915 – Estación Retiro in Buenos Aires, Argentina, opens.
* 1999 – Two trains carrying 2,500 people collide at the remote station of Gaisal, 310 miles from the city of Gauhati in West Bengal, India, killing more than 285 people. See: Gauhati rail disaster.

21st century

* 2002 – Deutsche Bahn opens the high-speed line between Frankfurt and Cologne, Germany.
* 2004 – Iowa Interstate Railroad takes over operations of a daily freight train from Iowa City, Iowa, to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway.
