The East Bay Sessions was an unofficial Smash Mouth CD released in 1999. Smash Mouth was recording at Red Clay studios and the studio decided to take material that was recorded and release it without permission of the band. Eventually, Smash Mouth took legal action and Red Clay had to stop distribution.Red Clay. "Why was it not an "official" release? Because what found its way to CD as the "East Bay Sessions" was a pretty raw early demo recording put out by some folks at the studio where it was recorded in an attempt to capitalize on the Smash Mouth's early success. The situation was later rectified in the band's favor and the recording stands as a pretty fair document of pre "Fush Yu Mang" Smash Mouth. The album is made up of demos, and some tracks are officially unreleased.
