powers=|The Scarecrow, later named Straw Man, is a
fictional character appearing in theMarvel Comics universe. He is an extra-dimensional magical entity (possibly a demon) which takes vengeance on its enemies, and was invited byDweller-in-Darkness to join the Fear Lords, but he betrayed them toDoctor Strange .He was created by
Scott Edelman andRico Rival in "Dead of Night" #11 (it was intended for "Scarecrow" #1, which even made it to subscription pages, but that series did not happen). The story by Edelman andRuben Yandoc for "Scarecrow" #2 appeared inMarvel Spotlight #26, and was eventually concluded byBill Mantlo in "Marvel Two-in-One " #18 with art by Ron Wilson,Jim Mooney , andDan Adkins . He lives inside apalimpsest painting of a laughing Scarecrow purchased by Jess Duncan and opposes the centuries-old Cult of Kalumai.Gil Kane andBerni Wrightson provided cover art. Many years later, he was brought back in the pages of "
Dr. Strange, Sorcerer Supreme " #31, byJean-Marc Lofficier ,Roy Thomas andDann Thomas , with art byLarry Alexander , in which he took on the name "Straw Man" to differentiate himself from the costumed killer the Scarecrow. He subsequently appeared in issues #38, and #40, written by the same and drawn byGeof Isherwood , meeting Daredevil in the latter issue.Scarecrow did not speak in his early appearances, but in his later appearances he most certainly did, and he pretended to be a newscaster named Skirra Corvus,
Latin for "Scarecrow."External links
