At the time of the release of this single Cher was on her tour, which prevented her from promoting the single. The song on its own did manage to enter a couple of Billboard charts, ultimately its only success were in the clubs and in dance single sales. Like Song for the Lonely, A Different Kind of Love Song was not released in Europe due to complications with Cher's record company.

Music video and promotion

No music video was made for this song however the song was promoted on the comedy series, Will & Grace. In 2002 Cher made a brief appearance on the comedy show and guest starred as God. During the show Cher appears in the character Jack's dream and suggests to him why he should remain an entertainer. Cher sings the chorus of the song while semi-naked men dressed as angels, shrouded in a drifting mist, dance behind her. Jack criticises her for shamelessly promoting her album in his dream sequence to which she replies, "Well, somebody's gotta pay for the fog and the dancing fairies!"
