"I Was Only Joking" is the name of a song written by Gary Grainger and Rod Stewart. Stewart released it as a track on his 1977 album "Foot Loose & Fancy Free". When released as a single, the song performed well, becoming a top forty hit in various countries. The song's lyrics are a reflection of the singer on his love life, detailing how he had been romantically active, but never to the point where he was ready for a serious relationship. Such literary devices as an allusion to Rudolph Valentino are used to support this idea. In the United Kingdom, "I Was Only Joking" charted as part of a double A-side with "Hot Legs. During 1991 Guns N' Roses used this song as an intro to "Patience" while touring, but it was no longer used after Izzy Stradlin's departure from the band.
