She is the wife of formerPhilippine President Joseph Estrada , and was the thirteenthFirst Lady of the Philippines from 1998 to 2001. She was born to Rufino Pimentel and Manuela Fernandez. In 2001, she ran as a candidate of the opposition for a seat in the Senate. She won, and served in the 12th and the 13thCongress of the Philippines , making her the first First Lady to win a seat in the Senate. Her son, Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada is a senator. She is a psychiatrist by profession, known as very close to the poor. She was dubbed as "First Lady ng Masa" (First Lady of the Masses) because of her medical and outreach missions during her term.She earned her medicine degree at the
University of Santo Tomas (UST), after which she worked as a Professor in the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, and a Physician at the UST Hospital and the National Center for Mental Health.External links
