It was created on January 1, 1999 as a result of the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998. Its administrative seat is the city ofZamość , although the city is not part of the county (it constitutes a separate city county). The county contains three towns:Szczebrzeszyn , which lies convert|21|km|mi|0|abbr=on west of Zamość,Zwierzyniec , which lies convert|24|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-west of Zamość, andKrasnobród , convert|22|km|mi|0|abbr=on south of Zamość.The county covers an area of convert|1872.27|km2|sqmi|1. As of 2006 its total population is 110,225, out of which the population of Szczebrzeszyn is 5,299, that of Zwierzyniec is 3,344, that of Krasnobród is 3,047, and the rural population is 98,535.
