A major extension to St. Davids Centre
:"This article refers to the shopping centre in Cardiff. For the shopping centre of the same name in Swansea, see St. David's Shopping Centre, Swansea"

The St. David's Centre (also known as St. David's Shopping Centre [ [http://www.stdavids-shopping.co.uk/ St. David's Shopping Centre] ] ) is one of the principal shopping centres in Cardiff, capital of Wales.

t. David's Centre

St. David's Centre was open to the public in January 1981, although it did not officially open until 24 March 1982. The centre has entrances on Queen Street and Working Street. It previously also had an entrance on Hill's Street, but this will eventually become an entrance to the new St. David`s 2 shopping centre (below), when completed. It is also joined internally with Queens Arcade.

The centre attracts an average footfall of 39,000,000 per annumcite web |url=http://www.capital-shopping-centres.co.uk/shoppingcentres/stdavids/ |publisher= Capital Shopping Centres |title= St. David's Shopping Centre |accessdate=2007-12-12] and has a core catchment of 2.4 million people and the 15million tourists that visit the city who help generate over £7.5 billion in retail spending. There are seventy-five individual shops and stores that cater for a broad demographic. The centre is anchored by Boots, Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and Bhs. It is strategically situated close to central car parking and benefits from being close to public transport services. The centre is also adjacent to St. David's Hall. When the new area of the shopping centre is finished, it is expected to be one of the busiest shopping centres in the European Union, exceeding Birmingham`s Bull Ring.

t. David's 2

St. David's Centre, and the whole of the southern end of Cardiff's shopping area, will be regenerated as part of the St David's 2 development.

St. David`s 2 is a massive £675m extension of the centre, and will see a large part of Cardiff's south city centre, much of it relatively underused thanks to it consisting of 1960s and 1970s newbuild, completely redeveloped. It will add an extra 967,500 square ft of retail spacecite web |url=http://www.capital-shopping-centres.co.uk/developments/stdavids.html |publisher= Capital Shopping Centres |title= St. David's 2 |accessdate=2007-12-12] to the city centre, including a 260,000 sq. ft John Lewis department store, 9 other large stores, and a further 90 smaller shops in a two-tiered 'grand arcade' shopping mall. It will also create 3,000 car parking spaces, new bars and restaurants, a new 55,000sq ft civic library, new public spaces, and 4,500 permanent jobs.cite web |url= http://www.talkdirect.com/tpl.php?c=4|publisher= Land Securities |title= St Davids 2 Cardiff |accessdate=2008-04-09] All enabling works, demolition and construction of the temporary library and Marriott multistorey car park have been completed. Construction of the new library is at an advanced stage, while construction is well underway on the rest of the main development. The whole development is scheduled to open in autumn 2009, although most of the development will be completed by summer 2008. It is anticipated that the grand opening of the John Lewis department store will be in autumn 2009.cite web |url= http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/cardiff-news/2008/04/26/john-lewis-hits-the-heights-in-cardiff-91466-20823152/2/|publisher= icWales |title= John Lewis hits the heights in Cardiff...What happens next |accessdate=2008-04-27]
