Pehr G. Holmes

Pehr Gustaf Holmes was a United States Representative from Massachusetts.

He was born in Mölnbacka, Värmland, Sweden on April 9, 1881. In 1886 he immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Worcester, Massachusetts. Holmes attended public schools, and engaged in manufacturing. He also engaged in the banking and insurance business. He was elected member of the common council of Worcester, was a member of the board of aldermen, and served as its president. He was mayor of Worcester 1917-1919, and served as a member of the Governor’s council, seventh Massachusetts district 1925-1928.

He was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-second and to the seven succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1931 – January 3, 1947). Holmes was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1946 to the Eightieth Congress. He returned to Worcester and his electrotype business, and died in Venice, Florida on December 19, 1952. His interment was in Old Swedish Cemetery in Worcester.
