155th Street (155th Street–Eighth Avenue on some signage) is a station on the IND Concourse Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of 155th Street and Eighth Avenue, it is served by the NYCS|D train at all times, and the NYCS|B train during rush hours.
This is the only Concourse Line station in Manhattan. The Polo Grounds, home of the former New York Giants, was directly upstairs from this station before the team left for San Francisco. The station currently has only one crossover mezzanine, but there was formerly another one at the south end. Much of the station is boarded up, presumably after the Polo Grounds closed in 1964 to make way for public housing. An extra-wide set of single street stairs (to accommodate baseball crowds at that time the station opened) lead to Eighth Avenue, but there is no longer direct access to West 155th Street and the Macombs Dam Bridge. The current station has three staircases to each platform, and four closed-off staircases. Some of the abandoned stairs were removed to enhance security. An abandoned tower sits on the south end at the Manhattan-bound platform. When the IRT Jerome Avenue Line and later Polo Grounds Shuttle ran upstairs, there was a provision for transfer tickets between the IND underground level and the IRT shuttle level. A very steep walk upstairs was needed to make this transfer.
