He was born in
Udaipur inRajasthan in India, where his father, the great Ustad Ziauddin Khan Dagar was the court musician of the Maharaja of Udaipur. He was taught dhrupad singing,Rudra veena andsitar by his father, and later by his elder brother, Late UstadZ M Dagar , the foremost Rudra-veena players of 20th century.Zia Fariduddin has done a lot for popularizing dhrupad music by his numerous concerts and workshops. He has performed widely in India and abroad, and received the Tansen Award from the
Madhya Pradesh government and theSangeet Natak Akademi Award . In 2005, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the North American Dhrupad Association.He has a remarkable command over microtones (swara-bheda) and various gamakas, and is noted for his gradual development of
alap through vilambit, madhya and drut laya (slow, medium and fast tempo). By far, if not for his current throat problems, he is the best dhrupadia India has produced in the recent times after the senior Dagar Brothers (Ustads N. Mohiuddin & N. Aminuddin Dagar).His students include the acclaimed
Gundecha Brothers ,Uday Bhawalkar andRitwik Sanyal .
