Robert Montgomery (administrator)

Sir Robert Montgomery GCSI, KCB, LLD (born 1809 in Moville, County Donegal, Ireland, died 1887 in India) was a British colonial administrator in India.

Robert was born at the family seat at New Park, Moville. At the age of seventeen he set off for India, initially to work in the Indian Civil Service. He married there and brought up a family. His second son was Henry, father of Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. Henry inherited the family estate in Ireland after his father's death.Alan Moorehead, "Montgomery". His first notable position was as a commissionar in Cawnpore. In May 1857, at the start of the Indian Mutiny, he was in Lahore in the Punjab [ [http://www.worldstatesmen.org/India_BrProvinces.htm Provinces of British India - Lieutenant governors] ] , where he was Lieutenant-Governor of the province. He immediately had the native garrison disarmed, which prevented them from taking any action in the rebellion. He was awarded with a knighthood for this action. The city of Sahiwal, Pakistan, founded in 1865, was formerly named "Montgomery", after Sir Robert [Encyclopedia Brittanica] [http://www.southpunjab.com/sahiwal South Punjab Portal - Sahiwal] ] .
