March 23 ,1933 -) is a former politician in theU.S. state ofNew York , who served as a Democratic member of theNew York State Assembly (143rd District 1967-83, 141st District 1983-2003, Buffalo,Erie County ) and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly (1979-1993). He also served as a delegate to theDemocratic National Convention from New York in 1972, 1976 & 2000.Arthur Eve won the Democratic primary for Buffalo mayor in 1977. A record turnout of 77-80% in the Black community was the highest ever for an African American community in the Northeast and surpassed only nationwide by mayor of Cleveland,
Carl Stokes ', victory in 1967. Eve lost the general election to Jimmy Griffin, who ran on the Conservative line, becoming the first Democrat candidate to lose the Buffalo mayoral election in 40 years.Arthur Eve arrived in Buffalo in February 1953 after graduating from West Virginia State College. He returned to Buffalo in 1955 after being drafted and serving in the US Army.
