Rangpur Medical College

Rangpur Medical College is one of the major government medical college in Bangladesh located in Rangpur.

=Brief History=To meet up the growing needs of modern medicine The Government of East Pakistan established a medical college in Rangpur in 1970 with a 500 beded teaching hospital. The first batch of 100 students were admitted in Rangpur Medical College in 1971 and was affiliated with Rajshahi University. Currently, the yearly intake has been increased to one hundred and fifty. Each year ten seats are fixed specially for international students of South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives. The medical college is running with several other affiliated teaching hospitals in addition to its own. These are infectious disease hospital,hospital for tuberculosis and chest disease,district hospital of Kurigram including six thana health complexes in rural settings. Moreover, the new inclusions since 1991 are neuclaer medicine centre, coronary care unit, diarrhoeal disease control and training unit, neuromedicine, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery, radiotherapy, physical medicine department, burn unit. General Medical Council of United Kingdom(England) has recognized the graduates of this college with effect from 1st January 1996. Currently running Rp-37 batch. Recently Rp-32 batch completed internship training.

=Admission Process=Admission process of undergraduate MBBS course for all government medical colleges in Bangladesh is conducted centrally by Director of Medical Education under DGHS under Ministry of Health. The test comprises written MCQ exam, which are held simultaneously in all government medical colleges in the same day through out the country. Candidates are selected for admission according to national merits and district, son or daughter of freedom fighters, tribal quota. For foreign students,admission is through embassy of Bangladesh in respective countries. Academic calender for different years is maintained by respective departments. Beside the MBBS course there are post graduation courses in surgery, medicine, gynaecology and paediatrics. Postgraduate and diploma courses admission test are conducted by medical college. Admission test consists of written MCQ exam.

=Location=Situated in Rangpur, 330 kilometres from Dhaka, and 210 km from Rajshahi District.It is located in the north west part of the Rangpur city. It is situated by the side of the inter country high way connecting India and Nepal. It is well communicated by rail, road and air with the capital city.

=Campus=The college and hospital campus extends over an area of 7597 sq. meter. The hospital building is situated in the western side of college building. On the northen side of the hospital building there are students hostels, residences for principal, director, teachers, doctors, nurses and other auxilliary staffs as well as nursing institute,central mosque, playgrounds, basketball court, lawn tennis court and gymnasium. The Shaheed Minar and main garden are situated in front of college building. The nuclear medicine centre and the model family planning clinic are situated on its southern side. The hostel for interns is situated at the eastern side of the main college building. Branches of Sonali and Agrani Banks are situated in the campus.

=Hospital Building=It is a big medical college of Bangladesh. A five storied building of 6 partitions is accommodating 875 beds with following desciplines.

=Residential Accommodation=There are two buildings(eight unit) located within the campus for professors and four more buildings(32 unit) for lecturers and clinical tutors. The Principal and Director of Hospital have specific building for their residential accommodation. Residential accommodation for the nurses, paramedics and auxilliary staffs of the college and hospital are available within the campus in different multistoried buildings. Incampus residential accommodation of students including those from overseas. There are three hostels for male students and the number of seat are 536. Two hostels for female and the number of seat are 327. Two hostels for intern doctors number of seat are 120.=Teaching Facilities=
Rangpur Medical College and its allied hospitals render the teaching facilities in lecture galleries, dissection halls, tutorial rooms, museum, autopsy room, modern morge, laboratories, seminar rooms and library, All the teaching facilities are equiped with slide projector, overhead projector, audio video cassette player, epidiascope and cordless microphones. It also provides equipments for practical classes and laboratorywork. The medium of teaching throughout the course is english. It includes a total of 875 beds for clinical teaching. The facilities which are contributing to clinical teaching along with treatment of the patients are cytological, histopathological examinations, culture and sensitivity, haematological examinations, clinical biochemistry, radiological investigation, gamma camera for isotope studies, ultrasonography, radiotherapy, electrocardiography, echocardiography, CT scan ,MRI, endoscopy and autopsy.

=Evaluation System=The university conducts the professional examinations on a fixed schedule laid down in the curriculam. A brief out line of evaluation system is as follows.

FOR GRADUATION MBBS(Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery) COURSE:

A. Periodic assessment and eligibility for professional examinations as:- 1. 75% attendance in every subject in theoretical practical & tutorial classes separately. 2. Satisfactory completion of assessment card in every subject. 3. Satisfactory results(50% marks) in annual examination. 4. Certificate of good conduct by head of the department of each subject.B. External examiners For oral and practical examination 50% of the examiners of all professional examinations are external examiners selected by the faculty of medicine of university. They are selected from different medical colleges of the same university as well as different universities.C. The Examination System(Final evaluation at professinal examinations) 1. There are three professional examinations scheduled at the end of 2nd, 4th and final year for evaluation to confer the degree of MBBS by the university. 2. In each professional examination students are evaluated by written, oral and practical clinical examination. 3. In written, practical, clinical and oral examination, the pass mark is 50% of the total mark alloted. The student must pass separately in each of the written, practical, clinical and oral examinations.

FOR POSTGRADUATION (MS & MD) and DIPLOMA COURSES:

A. 80% attendance is necessary in theoretical, practical & tutorial class.

B. For oral, practical & clinical examinations external examiners are selected from senior members of the faculty of same & different universities.

C. Examination systems are same as above like written, practical, oral and clinical and the pass mark is 50% of the total mark alloted.

=Students Extra Curricular Activities=
Sandhani, Medicine club, Friends Foundation, Leo club are voluntary organizations of students of this medical college. These organizations are working in the field of motivation of people for voluntary blood donation and posthumous eye donation for cornea transplantation. They also facilitates treatment of poor patients through distribution of free drug and collection of blood. They also arrange cloths donation in winter season in poor rural area. Students of this medical college take part in debate competition at national network arranged by the Bangladesh Television (BTV), where they proved there efficiency in many occasions. Similar competition are also arranged locally within the institution. They also arrange cultural programme in many occasion.
