Richard Wilkinson (public health)
- Richard Wilkinson (public health)
Richard Wilkinson is a leading researcher in social inequalities in health and the social determinants of health. He recently retired from his post as a professor of social epidemiology at the University of Nottingham in the UK. His two-page article in New Society published on 16 December 1976, entitled 'Dear David Ennals' [citation| url=http://www.sochealth.co.uk/history/ennals.htm | title=Dear David Ennals | first= Richard | last=Wilkinson | magazine=New Society| date = 16 December 1976 ] played an important part in the setting up of the Black Report on health inequalities (David Ennals was the UK Secretary of State for Social Services at the time). His research has drawn attention to the tendency for the populations to be healthier in societies which have smaller income differences between rich and poor.
Wilkinson wrote two influential books on the relationship between income inequality and public health (Unhealthy Societies: The Affliction of Inequality and The Impact of Inequality: How to Make Sick Societies Healthier).
Wilkinson is a major figure in the debates about population health (see "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_Health_Forum")
