Privy Council (Thailand)

The Privy Council is the royally-appointed group of advisors of the King of Thailand. Privy Councillors can, under royal command, represent the King at official functions. Other important functions include drafting amendments to the Palace Law regarding royal succession. The President of the Privy Council acts as regent pro tempore in the King's absence. King Bhumibol's Privy Council as of 2005 was composed mostly of retired military leaders and members of the royal family. They were:

*General Prem Tinsulanonda, (Thai: เปรม ติณสูลานนท์ ), President of the Privy Council
*General Surayud Chulanont (Thai: สุรยุทธ์ จุลานนท์ ), later appointed Prime Minister after the 2006 military coup
*Dr. Chaovana Nasylvanta (Thai: เชาวน์ ณ ศีลวันต์), also Director of the Crown Property Bureau
*Tanin Kraivixien (Thai: ธานินทร์ กรัยวิเชียร)
*Rear Admiral Mom Luang Usni Pramoj (Thai: อัศนี ปราโมช)
*Air Vice Marshal Kamthon Sindhavananda (Thai: กำธน สินธวานนท์)
*Air Chief Marshal Siddhi Savetsila (Thai: สิทธิ เศวตศิลา )
*Chulanope Snidvongs Na Ayuthaya (Thai: จุลนภ สนิทวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา), also Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Royal Development Study Centers

In recent years, the Privy Council president has played an unclear, backstage role in Thai politics. It was accused by rivals of being behind the bloodless military coup that toppled the corruption mired government of Thaksin Shinawatra.
