The Honshū-Shikoku Bridge Project is a system of
bridge s connecting the islands ofHonshū andShikoku across theInland Sea ofJapan , which were previously only connected by ferry. It consists of three major connections. All bridges are now controlled by Honshū-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Co., Ltd. (本州四国連絡高速道路株式会社) and Japan Expressway Holding and Debt Repayment Agency(日本高速道路保有・債務返済機構).Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway
Crossing
Akashi Strait (ja. 明石海峡, "Akashi-Kaikyō"), this connection linksHyōgo Prefecture on Honshū withTokushima Prefecture on Shikoku, usingAwaji Island for most of its length. The route connects to theSanyō Expressway at its northern terminus, allowing traffic to connect toHimeji ,Kobe , and other major cities on Honshū.This connection uses two
suspension bridge s. The more well-known of the two is theAkashi-Kaikyo Bridge , the world's longest suspension bridge, which connects Kobe toAwaji Island . The other bridge is theOhnaruto Bridge , connecting Awaji to the city of Naruto across theNaruto whirlpool .Although the connection was initially designed to accommodate railway service as well as road traffic, economic considerations turned it into a road connection only.
Seto-Chūō Expressway (Central-Seto Expressway)
Also known as the
Great Seto Bridge , this line connectsOkayama Prefecture toKagawa Prefecture . A series of six major bridges and five viaducts are used. The six bridges are: theShimotsui-Seto Bridge ,Hitsuishijima Bridge ,Iwakurojima Bridge ,Yoshima Bridge ,Kita Bisan-Seto Bridge , andMinami Bisan-Seto Bridge .The Seto-Chūō bridges are also used by JR trains (
Seto-Ōhashi Line ), and are designed to accommodate high-speedShinkansen service in the future, although there are no current plans to extend the Shinkansen to Shikoku.Nishiseto Expressway (Western-Seto Expressway)
Commonly known as the Shimanami Kaidō (しまなみ海道), this connection links
Hiroshima Prefecture toEhime Prefecture . The link consists of nine bridges: theShin-Onomichi Bridge ,Innoshima Bridge ,Ikuchi Bridge ,Tatara Bridge ,Ohmishima Bridge ,Hakata-Ohshima Bridge ,First Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge ,Second Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge , andThird Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge . It is the only route which can be crossed onbicycle or foot.External links
