Based on the fire giant Surtr from norse mythology, Surtur is a fictional character that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appears in "Journey Into Mystery" #97 (Oct 1963) and was created by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby.

Fictional character biography

Surtur is a huge fire demon native to the extradimensional plane of Muspelheim, located on the continent of Asgard, and is the mortal enemy of the Asgardian ruler Odin and his son the Thunder God Thor. Surtur first battles Odin thousands of years ago, ["Journey Into Mystery" #97 (Oct 1963)] and is eventually freed by Odin's adopted son Loki. Together with the Storm Giant Skagg, Surtur invades Earth but the pair are defeated by Odin, Thor and fellow Asgardian Balder. ["Journey Into Mystery" #104 (May 1964)] The cult the Sons of Satannish briefly call Surtur - together with ice giant Ymir - back to Earth, before being banished again by the Avengers and the sorcerer Doctor Strange. ["Avengers"#61 (Feb. 1969)] Surtur later invades Asgard, but is finally imprisoned by Thor. ["Thor" #176 - 177 (May - June 1970)]

Years later Surtur reappears, wielding the huge magical blade Twilight, and leading a host of fire demons. Sending the army to Earth to draw away Asgard's legions, Surtur then storms Asgard itsself, and defeats Thor and then Odin. Loki manages to deceive Surtur with illusions long enough for Odin to recover, and the two battle until falling into a dimensional rift. ["Thor" #349 - 353 (Nov. 1984 - Mar. 1985)] After a long absence Odin returns to Asgard, and it is revealed that he absorbed Surtur's essence, which eventually takes him over. Surtur manages to recreate his physical form and destroys much of Asgard until Thor, wielding the Odin Power, banishes Surtur to the Sea of Eternal Night. ["Thor" #399 - 400 (Jan - Feb. 1989); #418 (Jun. 1990) & #425 (Oct. 1990)]

Surtur reappears during the final Ragnarok, and is allowed to storm Asgard by Thor as he attempts to break the endless cycle. ["Thor" vol. 2, #85 (Dec. 1984)] The alien Beta Ray Bill briefly visits the ruins of Asgard after the battle, and sees Surtur's dead form falling from the sky, still clutching Twilight. ["Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill" #1 - 6 (2005)] When Thor returns from a period of self-induced hibernation, Thor enters the Odinsleep and finds Odin in a limbo between life and death, where Surtur stored a portion of his essence to prevent himself from being killed forever. Odin and Surtur now battle and die every day, only to be reborn and repeat the cycle. ["Thor" #7 - 8 (March - April 2008)]

Powers and abilities

Surtur is a fire demon possessing strength and durability surpassing that of Thor; the ability to generate intense heat, flames or concussive force; can generate magic; levitate and utilise inter-dimensional travel.
